Frieda M. Waelti-Fleischer, The Artist
- Frieda, born and raised in Switzerland , had early exposure to needle crafts because all her family members were creative. After completing public school, she trained as a needle art teacher and taught for 3 1/2 years in public schools. She married, and immigrated to British Columbia , Canada , in 1954.
- While raising her family, Frieda was engaged in various community projects, taught 13 years at Camosun College , worked in Extended Education and in the Francophone Community. She was a charter member of the Victoria Embroiderer's Guild.
- Freida created the first banner for Cordova Bay United Church in 1977, as well as banners for other churches in Victoria and abroad. She designed and crafted choir robes for the opening of the new Cordova Bay United Church in 1988.
- The seven-panel mural, "Creation", was dedicated in January, 1993. The acquisition of materials and making paper models took two years. Needlework took place during the winter months when no garden work is required.
"My heartfelt thanks to all who encouraged me along the way and helped make my dream of placing these panels in God's Temple become a reality.
The mounting of the panels was done by expert craftsmen, members of the church.
Hopefully, the "Creation" will inspire people to take a close look at nature around us, and to enjoy God's abundance and splendor !"
